Take the 90-Day Tithing Challenge

In his gospel, Mark wrote that Mary “came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on [Jesus’] head.” (Mark 14:3b, NIV) This perfume would have cost a year’s wages, but she gave it anyway. She didn’t hold anything back. She broke the jar and gave her gift. While Mary was criticized by others for her decision, Jesus said, “She has done a beautiful thing to me.” (Mark 14:6b, NIV).  At Connect, we want to give Jesus something beautiful as well. We want to become a church of jar breakers by trusting God with our tithe.

What is a Tithe?

The word “tithe” literally means a tenth. It is 10% of our gross income. Tithing has always been the Scriptural benchmark for generous giving. It doesn’t mean that we are limited to the tithe. It simply means that tithing is the starting gate for a life of generosity.

The Challenge

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” (Malachi 3:10, NIV)

You will never be able to outgive God. God promised to bless us if we are generous enough to give a tithe. In fact, God invited us to test Him, so that’s what we’re going to do. For the next 90 days, we’re challenging every person at Connect to bring the tithe. We’re challenging every family to take God at His Word, believing that God can do more with 90% than you can do with 100%.

Tithing Stories

  • This is a huge step for me. I am a full-time student, I work full time, and I am a mother of a 4-year-old. My fiance gets work here and there but technically I provide for three people. It’s rough, but I know that with God all things are possible. I know he will never let me or my family go without. Please continue to pray for me and my family.  A Connect Jar Breaker
  •  I am a single mom, so this decision (to Break my Jar) has me nervous. I’ve been praying for reassurance to calm my worries. Well today my boss comes in to tell me that I have 8 hours of personal time owed to me on this week’s check. That was exactly the sign I needed! I’m anxious to see what else is yet to come! Praise God! — A Connect Jar Breaker
  • My heart has never been comfortable with what we give at church each week. It is really hard as we also have so many debts. But I am going to trust that God will get us through this by giving him what is his and what he has asked that we give. I have to trust in HIM. We will be definitely hurting and scraping the bottom of the barrel but He has promised we will never go without. This is big but I believe HIM. — A Connect Jar Breaker
